The brief

A residential client wanted to make better use of their garden with a comfortable, covered outdoor space for family seating, relaxing and entertaining — without crowding the lawn.

The brief called for:

  • A central timber gazebo as the garden's focal point
  • A clear pathway connecting the house and patio to the gazebo
  • Soft, welcoming outdoor lighting for the evening
  • A balanced landscape layout that keeps the garden open and natural

The look needed to stay warm and proportionate — no heavy stone or fireplace-style structure.

Our approach

We started from the garden layout, testing several gazebo forms before settling on the right one — a trapezium shape to follow the garden lines, a hexagon for symmetry, and finally a pentagon, chosen because it creates a unique, bespoke feature while sitting proportionately within the lawn. The gazebo was positioned centrally and angled slightly towards the house to improve the view and keep balanced spacing around all edges. Inside, U-shaped bench seating follows the pentagon form rather than reading as circular, sized for cushions and comfortable use with a central area kept open for a table. The landscape plan adds a practical stepping-slab pathway and simple, contractor-friendly slab arrangement for a neat transition between home, path and gazebo. Lighting was kept warm and subtle — wall lights and optional LED strips inside the gazebo, low-level pathway lights and optional festoon lighting — with planting, planters and soft styling to finish. The package was delivered as 3D renders, proportional layout drawings and a floor-plan concept for contractor discussion.

What we delivered

  • Garden layout plan with gazebo shape, position and angle
  • Built-in U-shaped seating concept for approximately 10–12 people
  • Pathway, patio and slab arrangement for contractor discussion
  • Lighting, planting and styling recommendations
  • 3D renders and proportional layout / floor-plan drawings

Result

The final concept centres the garden on a distinctive, inviting retreat while preserving its open feel.

  • A bespoke pentagon-style timber gazebo (approx. 9–10 ft wide), centrally placed and angled slightly towards the house for the best view
  • A pitched, dark-grey shingle / slate-effect roof with half-height timber-clad side panels and an open entrance with a step
  • Built-in U-shaped bench seating following the gazebo shape, seating approximately 10–12 people, with a central space for a small table
  • A clear stepping-slab pathway linking house, patio and gazebo
  • Warm gazebo and low-level pathway lighting, with optional festoon lights, planters and styling
