The brief
The client wanted to transform an existing garage into a fully functional Bharatanatyam dance studio that could be used for regular classes and group practice. The studio needed to capture the essence of Indian classical dance culture, provide enough room for 10+ students, and include practical features such as safe flooring, good lighting, sound setup and heating for comfortable use throughout the year.
Our approach
We approached the design by balancing cultural identity with practical studio planning. The layout was organised to maximise open practice space and allow smooth movement for group sessions. Bharatanatyam-inspired design elements were introduced to create a strong visual and cultural connection to the art form. Special care was taken to make the space safe for children, with a clear and comfortable practice zone. Moodful lighting was incorporated to enhance the studio ambience, while speakers and heaters were included to support continuous use across all seasons.
The outcome
The final studio became a warm, inspiring and functional dance space tailored for Bharatanatyam practice and teaching. The converted garage now supports group sessions comfortably, accommodates 10+ students, and provides a safe and engaging environment for learning. With the addition of lighting, sound and heating, the studio is suitable for uninterrupted year-round use and offers a professional yet culturally rooted setting.
