The brief

A private client wanted a hard-working garden room that could flex across the whole day and the whole year — not a summerhouse, but a properly insulated, properly finished extension to the home.

Footprint: 10 ft × 13 ft (approx. 3.05 m × 3.96 m).

The space needed to serve four roles at once:

A calm garden office or workspace
A dining room for family use, around a rectangular 6-seater table
A relaxed seating area overlooking the garden
Practical storage, built into the seating

The design also had to feel bright and connected to the garden, and be built to last with a genuine structural guarantee.

Our approach

We treated the garden room as a true extension rather than an outbuilding — starting from a full reinforced concrete base with mesh, insulation and DPM, then building up a 4×2 insulated timber frame with structural steel support where needed. The flat roof is insulated and finished in durable EPDM rubber with skylights for daylight, while aluminium sliding doors and generous glazing open the room to the garden. Inside, luxury vinyl flooring, MDF skirting and architraves, integrated lighting, sockets and heating give it the comfort of an indoor room. The bespoke L-shaped booth was designed around the client's rectangular six-seater table, with concealed storage below and a day-bed-style bench that lets the same space work for dining or relaxing. Outside, patio slabs reuse existing materials where suitable to connect the room to the garden seating area.
